A Honeymooner's Guide for a Perfect Romantic Weekend

Fancy a weekend where you can finally stop glued to your devices (except for the priceless picture moments, of course) and just live, laugh, and love? Maybe it's for your honeymoon or simply to reignite that romantic spark, but one thing's for sure – Newcastle, NSW, is one heck of a canvas for love to paint its finest moments. And oh, there's a good dose of indulgence too.

Here's your guide, peppered with my experiences as a wedding photographer that have led me to believe that Newcastle isn't just another spot on the map; it's an elixir for lovers looking to whisk themselves away into a world that's more than sea and sand.

Friday Night

You've just arrived in Newcastle, city of both history and reinvention. The palpable energy of the place makes it clear – you’ve entered an urban oasis that caters to the young at heart.

Sweet Escape

Check-in to The QT Newcastle and kick off your weekend with cocktails on the rooftop. With views of Harbour, a rooftop bar and a restaurant downstairs that boasts a fine dining menu to die for, you're set for that Friday night feeling that only the juiciest prawns and a glass of top-shelf wine can bring.

If you feeling like exploring and eating out, head to Scotties for some of the best fresh seafood in town, you must try the Lobster Club, hands down the best sandwich ever, paired back with a glass of Rose.

Rom-Com Movie Night

After a quick freshen up, it’s time for the cliché that never gets old. Or does it? A movie night in may be just what the heart desires. The Oracle’s colossal screen and diverse film list make for a cozy yet cinematic prelude to the days ahead. And better yet, for dessert, a bubble bath accompanied by bubbles and room service.

Saturday Brunch & Beach

Morning light shines upon you, and it's time to fuel up for a day of adventure. Head to the Estabar for a brunch that's equal parts delicious and Instagrammable. The smashed avo is a must – trust me.

With your bellies full, set your GPS for the Bathers Way Coastal Walk. It's not just about burning off breakfast; it's about the splendid views and the one-on-one time. Stop at the various lookouts and breathe in the salty air, wrap your arms around each other. Grab a takeaway coffee from the Newcastle Kiosk and stroll on.

Down by the Water

Newcastle Beach is more than a simple stretch of sand. Surfers provide a perpetual show riding the waves, and the golden hour sets the scene for some epic photographs. Remember, it's your weekend, so don't hesitate to request that passerby (probably me) to capture that perfect silhouette as the sun dips low.

Afternoon:

For a quieter respite, visit the historic Bogey Hole (the best kept secret), a convict-carved swimming pool right on the ocean's edge. It's akin to a romance movie set.

The Bogey Hole at sunset is more than just a photo opportunity; it's a moment suspended in time. While it seems like the universe's giant canvas has been set aflame, it's also a great time to burn away any unwanted distress – this pool's also a veritable well of zen.

The Dinner

Wine & Dine

For dinner, get your dancing shoes ready because you're going to start with a little class at The Edwards. This former warehouse oozes an industrial chic vibe that's perfect for savoring contemporary Australian fare.

Don't stop the night just yet. Head out for Karoke at Jams. It's not about your vocal cords; it's to let your hair down in a feel good atmosphere. If the idea of Karaoke scares you, peruse next door to The Rogue Scholar for live music and a dance.

Sunday Sensations

Begin your day and take a leisurely stroll to the Nobby's Lighthouse and catch the panoramic view of the coast—a perfect scene for that encapsulates the weekend.

The head to the famous Sunday Farmers Market in Newcastle Showground. Escape to nature one more time, and pack a picnic with goods from the Sunday Farmers Market. Head to Hickson Street Lookout, a not so best kept secret (yet still some local Novasatians don’t know exist). The wide-open space and the buzz of local picnic goers and ocean views just add those final magic touches to your weekend.

The Return Journey

Back to Reality

Sigh. Yes, the weekend is over, and real life awaits. But don’t think of it as the end; think of it as the beginning of this new chapter in your lives. More adventures await, and who knows, maybe Newcastle will be your first of many romantic getaways.

Capturing the Memories

Before you go, remember to snap one final photo as a memento. Because years from now, when your wedding slideshow is put up one more time, or when you're celebrating your 50th anniversary, that Newcastle weekend will stand out as the turning point, where you realized just how magical love can be.

And remember, love is less about the place and more about the company. But then again, a little salt in the air has never hurt anyone's heart.

Pack Your Bags with Love

It's about balance. Balance the tourist spots with the offbeat attractions. Balance the planned activities with the spontaneous moments. And most importantly, balance the laughter with the deeper conversations. If you can achieve this equilibrium, your romantic weekend is sure to be etched in your hearts for a lifetime.

Take this blueprint, mix in your personal favorites, and watch as Newcastle unfolds as your love's newest ally. Because hey, even the most adventurous of hearts seek a home where they can just be. And I've got a strong feeling Newcastle could well be that for you two.
